What? A disciple is one who follows another or is a “student”. Jesus called only a handful of people to follow Him. It wasn’t uncommon during this time in history for a Jewish Rabbi (Jesus) to call some young people to be his apprentices. There are three times in the Bible where Jesus clearly defined the requirements for becoming one of His students:
Luke 9:23-24
Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.
Matt 4:19
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”
Matt 11:28-30
”Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus challenged His students (followers) to …
1. Deny themselves
2. Take up their cross
3. Follow Him
4. Lose their life
Jesus promised His students…
1. That they will “save” their life (find their life in Him).
2. That they will find rest for their souls.
3. That Jesus will make them “fishers of men”.
Jesus described the type of person that would be willing to follow Him:
1. Those who are weary and burdened (broken and tired by sin)
2. Those who are looking for “rest”.
3. Those who are willing to trust and learn from Him.
4. Those who are looking for life.
